    ICRI-Metro New York Presents:

Adjacent Construction: Mitigating Concerns for Nearby Structures in Dense Urban Areas

We invite you to join us via Zoom on Thursday, October 29th at 12:00 PM for a presentation on Adjacent Construction with Nathaniel Smith, Principal at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger.

The event will be FREE for all ICRI-MNY chapter members, and $10 for non-members.

One AIA Learning Unit/HSW will be awarded.

A link to join the meeting will be sent out to all who have registered one day prior to the event. We hope you'll join us then!

    About the Presentation:

Construction performed in dense urban environments like New York City can create serious effects on surrounding buildings and infrastructure. To minimize the risk of damage to adjacent structures, project teams must mitigate potential issues with protections and controls. These measures range from simple safety steps to very complex installations requiring specially engineered systems. In this presentation, we will explore typical and atypical risks associated with construction operations on adjacent buildings and review protections required under the New York City Building Code.

    About the Speaker:

Nathaniel Smith is a Principal in the New York City office of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH).  He has fifteen years of engineering experience including structural design, investigations of building damage and collapses, repair and rehabilitation projects, and monitoring of foundation installations.  His background in geotechnical engineering provides him with knowledge of soil and foundation types that aids him in performing structural evaluations of existing buildings and investigations of structural damage and collapses.  He has over five years of full-time field engineering experience and uses that experience in his design and investigation projects.  Mr. Smith has over 10 years of experience with adjacent construction effects and has given numerous presentations on the effects of adjacent construction on existing structures.
