The ICRI Metro NY Demo Day is a full day, industry event geared towards providing hands-on learning opportunities for all local Architects and Engineers who work with architectural terra cotta repair and restoration projects. This event is an outstanding opportunity for Architects, Engineers, and Design Professionals in the New York City metro area to participate in hands-on demonstrations of terra cotta materials, as well as to build technical knowledge and professional contacts in this industry. Your design team members – including younger staff and interns – will be able to touch and see these material demonstrations firsthand and experience the “how to” for architectural terra cotta repair and replacement, with products demonstrated by multiple exhibitors during this half day session.
This event is FREE to all practicing Architects, Engineers, and Building Consultant Professionals, and will include the following benefits:

Terra Cotta Restoration
This hands-on demonstration showcases our complete terra cotta restoration system, guiding attendees through every step of patching and casting TC pieces with our specialized mortar. Presented in a live, cooking-show format, participants will get hands-on experience patching terra cotta with our mortar, while seeing finished and in-progress pieces side by side as we walk through applying our Potassium Silicate paint and Terra Cotta glaze to complete the restoration process.

Historic Terra Cotta Restoration
This session follows the complete lifecycle of a historic terra cotta restoration project, from initial 3D scanning of a damaged or missing unit through to a finished, kiln-fired replacement. Attendees will see how field survey data is translated into accurate shop drawings, how those drawings inform hand-built models and plaster moulds, and how the moulding, casting, and firing process produces a unit that matches the original in profile, texture, and colour. The demonstration is designed to give architects, engineers and contractors a clear, practical understanding of what’s involved in specifying and sourcing like-for-like terra cotta replacements on Landmarked and historic buildings.

Laser Scanning for Terra Cotta Replacement
This course demonstrates how high-resolution laser scanning is used to capture existing architectural terra cotta units that require replacement and create accurate digital models for restoration projects. Participants will follow the workflow from scanning deteriorated or damaged units through digital modeling and learn how the resulting data supports estimating, drafting, and the production of precisely matched replacement units.

This hands-on demonstration introduces participants to the installation and performance of helical anchors in terra cotta masonry. Attendees will learn proper installation techniques and observe field testing methods used to evaluate in-situ anchor performance, accounting for variations in substrate condition. The session will demonstrate how installation practices and performance testing can be used to develop reliable, project-specific repair solutions for terra cotta restoration.

Architectural Terra Cotta: The Art and Science of Longevity
Architectural terra cotta has demonstrated exceptional long-term performance on building facades, remaining a defining feature of many historic structures generations after installation. This hands-on course explores the material properties, manufacturing processes, and performance characteristics that have contributed to terra cotta’s durability and continued use in facade restoration projects. Through case studies, material demonstrations, performance testing data, a virtual manufacturing plant tour, and a hands-on unit pressing activity, participants will examine how terra cotta is produced, how historic units are documented and replicated, and how performance testing and lifecycle evidence demonstrate the material’s long-term durability in facade applications. Participants will also explore how modern restoration projects continue the legacy of this durable and versatile architectural material. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how proven field performance, lifecycle considerations, and preservation objectives inform restoration, replacement, and material selection decisions.

Terra Cotta Repair and Preservation
Terra cotta repair and preservation is a multistep process, requiring installation of the proper materials in the correct sequence to achieve long term performance and match color to the original aesthetic of the structure. Terra cotta is a composite material, using a fired clay bisque as the main body and a ceramic glaze on the exposed surfaces. The clay bisque and the ceramic glaze have different properties and the best long term performance is achieved by matching the properties of the repair materials to the original terra cotta properties.
